Breaking the Bass Ceiling

At Ze Fuss, we believe bass music should belong to everyone. Not just the big names at the top of the lineup. Not just the same white guys behind the decks every weekend. The rise of female and femme-identifying artists in EDM is powerful and long overdue, but it also highlights how much further we have to go to make the scene truly inclusive.

Let’s be honest: electronic music is still dominated by white, cisgendered men. You can see it in festival bookings, club residencies, streaming playlists, and who gets headlining features. This is especially frustrating when we remember that electronic music was created by Black, Latinx, and queer communities. These pioneers built the foundations of house, techno, and bass culture. Yet, the very people who birthed this movement are often erased or pushed to the margins.

That’s exactly why Ze Fuss exists. As a grassroots bass and arts collective rooted in community, resistance, and celebration, we focus on uplifting femme and queer artists, especially those who are often from over looked or marginalized demographics. We don’t just want to be included—we want to create our own spaces that reflect the real diversity and brilliance of this scene.

It’s been encouraging and exciting to see artists like REZZ, CloZee, Sara Landry, and Zingara gaining global recognition. These are artists making waves not because they fit a mold, but because they break it. They produce, perform, and promote their work with originality and fire. Still, visibility alone isn’t enough. Many talented femme, queer, and BIPOC artists are overlooked, underpaid, and pushed out by industry bias.

This is where intersectionality comes in. We can’t talk about representation without looking at how race, gender, sexuality, and class overlap. A white cis woman in EDM does not face the same barriers as a Black trans woman or a queer Indigenous DJ. If we want real change, we have to talk about these differences and design spaces that welcome all of us.

At Ze Fuss, we’re working to shift the culture. We host events with intentionally diverse lineups. We promote and uplift other collectives who share our values where femme and queer artists can learn production, sound design, and DJing in a space that’s safe and welcoming. We highlight local and emerging talent on our digital platforms and in our events. Our goal is to support artists not just in their art, but in their growth and visibility.

We believe in bass music that builds community. We believe in joy as a form of resistance. And we believe that when you give people who’ve been pushed aside the mic, they’ll shake the foundations of the whole scene.

To those remixing the status quo, we see you. To the artists bending genres and breaking binaries, we hear you. And to everyone still finding their voice in a system that wasn’t built for you, we’re saving you a spot on the dance floor.
